GRAND FORKS, N.D. - University of North Dakota athletics director Brian Faison and head women's basketball coach Gene Roebuck announced today the hiring of John Motherwell as the assistant coach for the UND women's basketball program. Motherwell will serve as recruiting coordinator and will work mainly with the perimeter players.

"John has a lot to offer our program and we are very excited to have him on board," Roebuck said. "Being from Michigan, he has numerous contacts in the upper Midwest, and that will give us more opportunity to recruit 'outside the box,' so to speak."

Motherwell spent the past four seasons as an assistant for the Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team where he served as the recruiting coordinator and camp director. In his first year on the staff (2005-06), the Panthers tallied a school-record 22 wins and with a conference championship, earned a berth to the NCAA Division I tournament.

From 2000-05, Motherwell was an associate head women's basketball coach at Minnesota-Moorhead where he served as the recruiting coordinator and camp director. He also worked as a HPER instructor and an admissions representative. While with the Dragons he recruited more all-conference players than any other staff in the conference and his recruits participated in three NCAA tournaments.

Prior to his move the Minnesota-Moorhead, Motherwell coached as an assistant at Concordia (Minn.; 1999-2000) and the College of St. Scholastica (1998-99). He was the recruiting coordinator at both schools and served as the interim head coach at Concordia.

Before advancing to the collegiate level, he coached basketball, football, and tennis at various schools in Michigan.

He earned a bachelor's degree in general studies from Michigan in 1995 and attended Eastern Michigan from 1988-92 where he was a football letterwinner.
