GRAND FORKS, ND - Former letterwinners, coaches and current staff members from the University of North Dakota gathered recently for the Seventh Annual Dewey Sundby & Gene Murphy Golf Scramble.

Over 125 Fighting Sioux came together at Legends Golf Club in Prior Lake, Minn., which is owned by UND alum Tip Enebak. The event not only allowed old friends to reunite, but it gave some of the recent graduates and new staff members an opportunity to get to know some of the legends to have worn a Sioux jersey.

During the Friday social, head coach Chris Mussman presented Charlie Kankel (1959-61) with the first University of North Dakota Football Legends Award.

"Whenever Charlie is around us, he has a calming influence on our staff and our team, and also a few of the coach's wives in the stands," Mussman said. "He has demonstrated unwavering loyalty to his country and to his football team."

Kankel was honored with a plaque and a standing ovation from all those in attendance.

"Through all of the things that I have been through in my life, the University of North Dakota has given me one of the greatest gifts that I have ever received, one that no one, under any circumstance, could ever take away from me and that's an education," Kankel said. "Recognizing me for this is simply recognizing me for doing the right thing. I think everyone should have loyalty and dedication to their school. We need to be sure that not only the athletics are running on a high level but the educational institutions as well."
