GRAND FORKS, N.D.--Senior wide receiver Weston Dressler and junior forward Kierah Kimbrough were named the University of North Dakota's 2007-08 male and female athletes of the year, announced tonight at UND's annual student-athlete awards banquet.
Glenn "Red" Jarrett Male Athlete of the Year: Weston Dressler, Football
A senior wide receiver on the football team ... Graduates as the holder of 19 different school records ... A 2007 Harlon Hill Trophy finalist ... Earned 2007 All-America honors from five different organizations ... Earned his second straight NCC Most Valuable Receiver award ... Named to the 2007 All-NCC first team at three different positions (wide receiver, return specialist, utility) ... Earned his fourth straight All-NCC first team selection, becoming just the fourth player in conference history to do so ... Named to ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America first team for the second straight year ... A national semifinalist for the Draddy Trophy, the highest academic honor in NCAA football (all divisions) ... Earned his third straight Academic All-NCC selection ... Appeared in 36 games and scored seven goals and six assists ... Named to second straight Academic All-NCC softball team ... A candidate for her second straight CoSIDA Academic All-America honor ... A senior center on the basketball team ... Overcame several serious injuries to play in 87 career games ... During her career helped lead UND to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance, four NCAA postseason appearances, three NCC regular season championships and three NCC Tournament titles ... Named to the NCC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll as a senior and junior ... Appeared in 25 games this season, including one start, and achieved career highs in scoring (3.8 ppg) and rebounding (3.3 rpg) ... Native of Wahpeton, N.D.
Male Unsung Hero: Robie Bina, Hockey
A senior defenseman on the hockey team ... Returned from a near-debilitating neck injury to play in every game over his final two seasons while emerging as one of the top defensemen in the WCHA ... Earned the first postseason honors of his career in 2007-08 when he was named to the All-WCHA third team ... Was also named to his second straight WCHA All-Academic Team ... A finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for academic excellence ... Helped lead UND to the NCAA Frozen Four in each of his four seasons ... Appeared in all 43 games as a senior and scored two goals and 23 assists ... Ranked third in the WCHA in defenseman scoring ... Native of Grand Forks, N.D.
Female Rookie of the Year: Katie Girard, Diving
A freshman on the diving team ... Earned All-America honors in the 1-meter dive after placing eight at the 2008 NCAA Division II Championship ... Helped lead UND to a third-place NCAA finish ... Also helped UND to a runner-up finish at her first NCC Championship ... Place fifth in the conference in the 1-meter and sixth in the 3-meter.
Male Rookie of the Year: Joel Schwenzfeier, Football
A freshman defensive back on the football team ... Stepped into the starting lineup halfway through the season and helped anchor the NCC's top defensive unit ... Appeared in 12 games and finished seventh on the team with 37 tackles (24) solo ... Also had four tackles-for-loss, one quarterback sack and one pass breakup ... Also had the team's longest punt return of the season (52 yards) ... Helped lead UND to its fifth consecutive NCAA postseason appearance.
The athletic department also honored sophomore tight end Marcus Tibesar and sophomore pitcher Michele Wolf with Sioux Service Awards for outstanding community involvement. Tibesar headed up the UND football team's Holiday Magic for Markus initiative, which honors the memory of the late Markus Bryant by providing Christmas toys for sick area children. Wolf, a member of the softball team, serves as the president of the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) while also lending her time to several charitable organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics Minnesota.
Also, UND senior Lisa Persuitti was named the recipient of the Sioux-per Spirit Award, given annually to a member of the non-athletics student body whose efforts ehance Figthing Sioux Athletics. Persuitti served as the president of the Sioux Crew student organization.
