GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota athletic department announced today that its 2008-09 men’s hockey schedule will feature 38 regular season games, including 17 home games and 21 away contests.
With two home exhibition games also on the schedule, fans will have the opportunity to see the Fighting Sioux play on 19 home dates.
Highlighting the home schedule are seven Western Collegiate Hockey Association series. WCHA rivals scheduled to visit Ralph Engelstad Arena this season are Minnesota (Jan. 9-10), Wisconsin (Oct. 31-Nov. 1), Denver (Jan. 23-24), Colorado College (Feb. 28-March 1), St. Cloud State (Dec. 12-13), Minnesota State (Feb. 13-14) and Alaska Anchorage (Nov. 14-15).
In other home regular season games, the Sioux will take on regional rival Bemidji State on Jan. 3 and ECAC traditional power Cornell on Nov. 28-29.
The Big Red will be making their first-ever trip to Grand Forks.
The Fighting Sioux, who advanced to their 18th NCAA Frozen Four this past season and fourth in a row under head coach Dave Hakstol, will begin play on Oct. 5 with an exhibition game against Manitoba at Ralph Engelstad Arena. UND will also play a home exhibition game against the United States Under-18 team on Dec. 19.
North Dakota’s road schedule features two tournament appearances. The first of those is on Oct. 10-11, when the Sioux will travel to Boston for the IceBreaker Invitational at Boston University’s Agganis Arena. There, UND will take on host Boston University and Massachusetts.
UND will compete in the Great Lakes Invitational on Dec. 27-28 in Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena, taking on Michigan State on Dec. 27 and either Michigan or Michigan Tech the following day.
Other non-conference road games for the Fighting Sioux include a two-game series at Harvard on Dec. 5-6 and a single game at Bemidji State on Jan. 2.
