WBB NOTES: Sioux host Minnesota, Crookston in exhibition game

UP NEXT FOR NORTH DAKOTA

The University of North Dakota will play its second and final exhibition game of the season when it welcomes Minnesota, Crookston to the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. The Fighting Sioux and the Golden Eagles are scheduled to tipoff at 7 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY

All-time, North Dakota holds an unblemished 10-0 record against Minnesota, Crookston. UND opened the series with the Golden Eagles on Dec. 21, 2000 with a 98-59 victory at the Hyslop Fieldhouse.

The last time the two teams tipped off was on Jan. 13, 2009 with UND taking a 82-64 win at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

On average, the Fighting Sioux are out-scoring the Golden Eagles, 91-64.

RECORD REWIND

The University of North Dakota women's basketball program holds a 751-268 (.737) record all-time since the first game was played in 1974. At home the Fighting Sioux are 410-74 (.847) and are 275-139 (.664) on the road and 70-40 (.636) when in neutral territory.

Under head coach Gene Roebuck, UND is 575-104 (.847) in the Great West Conference.

NOTING THE FIGHTING SIOUX

North Dakota opened up the season on Oct. 29 with an 86-56 victory over Jamestown at the Hyslop Sports Center. Senior Kayla Bagaason (Clearbrook, Minn.) led the Sioux with 23 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field with nine points from beyond the arc. Three other players, sophomore Mallory Youngblut (Davenport, Iowa), senior Alys Seay (Grand Forks, N.D.), and senior Whitney Ledger (Bismark, N.D.) also finished with double-figures scoring 16, 14, and 11 points, respectively.

UND shot 50 percent (27-for-54) from the field compared to Jamestown's 37.2 percent (16-for-43.

The Sioux also shot 61.5 percent (24-for-39) from the free throw line and 44.4 percent (8-for-18) from beyond the arc.

NOTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES

Wedensday's game at Grand Forks will serve as an exhibition game for both teams. This is the first game for Minnesota, Crookston who will open regular-season play on Nov. 20 after facing Iowa State in Ames, Iowa on Nov. 8 for a second exhibition contest.

The Golden Eagles closed out the 2008-09 season 9-18 overall and 5-15 in the NSIC. Jamie Zelinsky led the team with a 16 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Zelinsky was named to the NSIC All-Conference second team.

Bri Zabel was the team's top rebounder with an average of 6.4 per game.

MINNESOTA, CROOKSTON HEAD COACH MIKE ROYSLAND

Coach Mike Roysland brings 42 combined years of head coaching experience to the Golden Eagle Women's Basketball program. He coached girl's volleyball for 15 years at Win-E-Mac and finished with a record of 364 wins and 51 losses. Roysland was the head boy's basketball coach for a combined 27 years at Win-E-Mac and Fosston and finished with a record of 360 wins and 237 losses. He was a Co-Coach on a North Tartan AAU team that took third place at Nationals in 2002 and won the National Championship in 2003.

Wednesday's game will be broadcast on 100.3 FM CatCountry with Paul Ralston handling the play-by-play.

PROTECT AND SERVE

All-time, the Fighting Sioux are 410-74 (.847) when it comes to defending their own court and are 314-30 (.913) under the tutelage of Gene Roebuck.

Since the program's beginning in 1974, the Green and White have gone undefeated in Grand Forks six times, including back-to-back seasons from 1997-1999. In those years, the Sioux were national champions.

LET'S GET BETTY TO RUMBLE

UND is 81-6 (.913) all-time at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, which opened prior to the 2004-05 season.

In 2007, UND drew 28,514 fans to its 15 home games, an average of 1,901 per game. In 2006, UND was cited by the WBCA for having the Best Fans and Best Facility in Division  II.

Last year, 24,492 fans enjoyed the Sioux in action.

During the 2008-09 season, the Fighting Sioux scored 1,150 points at the Betty.

Head coach Gene Roebuck and the Sioux student-athletes are accessible for media interviews. All player interviews must be arranged through the media relations contact, Christy Kramer. Kramer can be reached at (701) 777-4210. Interviews will not be granted before or during home games.

Post-game interviews with Roebuck and requested players will be conducted on the court at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

Players and Roebuck will also be available for comment before or after practice during the week.
