GRAND FORKS, N.D. - With the help of two relay titles and a pair of diving championships, the University of North Dakota women's swimming and diving team defeated Illinois-Chicago 138-103.

The Fighting Sioux opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay. "I was happy with how the girls started out the meet in the 200 medley relay," head coach Steve Parsons said. "We had some girls really step it up today to come away with some season-best times."

Dalin went on to take first in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 21.67. Right behind her was Jenny Comstock (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) who touched at 25.30. Conci took second in the 100 fly with a time of 59.40.

Cathryn DeShaw (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) won the 200 I.M. with a time of 2:10.59 and Dalonda Dalin (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished first in the 500 free with a season-best time of 5:15.67. Dalin also took second in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.34.

Also with a pair of second-place finishes was Medon who touched at 2:11.88 in the 200 I.M. and 59.13 in the 100 backstroke.

UND closed out the day with another relay win as the 200 freestyle relay 'A' team of Gormally, Dalonda Dalin, Allison Maxwell (Sr., Williston, N.D.), and Devonne Dalin finished with a season-best time of 1:38.12.

Devonne Dalin and Maxwell also finished 2-3 in the 200 free with times of 1:58.34 and 1:58.83, respectively.

The Sioux went 1-2 in both of the diving events with Stephenie Varichak (Jr., Fridley, Minn.) winning the 1-meter with a season-best score of 224.70 and Megan Keidel (So., Bismarck, N.D.) took second with 216.83 points. Keidel then won the 3-meter board with a season-best score of 218.33 and Varichak came in second with 217.73 points. Katie Girard (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) finished third in the 3-meter with a score of 206.63.

"On the diving side, we've been very consistant," Parsons said. "Stephenie has been doing extremely well and I couldn't be more happy. Megan just had two good weeks of practice and it really showed today.

"Overall, we had a good meet and look forward to tomorrow."

The Sioux are back in action Saturday afternoon as they take on Illinois-Chicago, Butler, and UW-Milwaukee. Events are set to begin at 1 p.m.
