GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The University of North Dakota men's swim team fell to Illinois-Chicago 146-79 as only one individual and one team title were captured.
"It was a tough meet for our guys and we knew that it would be heading into today's events," head coach Steve Parsons said. "I think it was our lack of depth in some of the events that finally caught up to us."
Keisuke Yagi (Sr., Bunkyo, Tokyo) won UND's lone individual event with a time of 58.05 in the 100 breaststroke. The Sioux went 1-2-3-4 in that event with Bryce Klasen (Fr., Park Rapids, Minn.) in second with a season-best time of 1:04.67. Also with a season-best time was Preston Wahl (So., Bismarck, N.D.) who finished third at 1:05.20. Anthony Swanholm (So., Fargo, N.D.) founded out the top four with a time of 1:08.17.
The UND 200 free relay 'A' team of Ian McKenzie (Fr., Norman, Okla.), Nathan Jobe (So., Fergus Falls, Minn.), Ben Adams (So., Sitka, Alaska), and Daniel Moraes (Sr., Salvador, Brazil) wrapped up the day's competition with a time of 1:26.04 to take first. To start off the day, McKenzie, Yagi, Moraes, and Jobe took second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:36.26.
The Sioux also came away with four other second-place finishes as Moraes finished the 200 free with a time of 1:44.78, Jobe touched at 21.79 in the 50 free, McKenzie finished the 100 free at 47.73, and George Philbin (Fr., Plymouth, Minn.) took second in the 500 free with a time of 4:52.55.
"Tomorrow, we swim 16 events," Parsons said. "We are more used to that so hopefully we see some better times."
North Dakota will return to the pool on Saturday afternoon. Along with Illinois-Chicago, the Sioux will swim against UW-Milwaukee.
