In case you missed it, on the cover of Wednesday's USA Today Sports Section is an article that centers sophomores Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux on the front page and half of the second page.
Click HERE to view the well-written story online about the Lamoureux twins and their hockey upbringing including playing with their brothers, being quoted as 'the female Mark Messiers', and mixing school at UND with Olympic hockey, by Meri-Jo Borzilleri.
Not only have the Grand Forks natives been featured by USA Today, ESPN The Magazine named two 'NEXT' athletes, players the magazine will cover over the following couple years as up-and-coming stars (one of the other athletes happened to be a player most NFL fans have come to know in Minnesota Vikings rookie wide receiver Percy Harvin), along with requests from Sports Illustrated among others.
The Fighting Sioux were already on the map before the twins announced their decision to transfer becoming more and more of a story in the media's eyes as head coach Brian Idalski took over the team in the 2007-08 season wiping everything out and installing new philosophies and systems. He led the Sioux from zero wins in the WCHA, to four his first season and nine a season ago - a team record. That wasn't the only record to fall as numerous team and individual records fell over the past two years.
The increase in coverage followed as locally there has been a more interested, everyday coverage and nationally there is greater interest from all over the U.S. and Canada including the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) and channels/newspapers all over North America.
On Nov. 2, UND announced that Midcontinent Communications had agreed to rebroadcast Fighting Sioux women's hockey games on The Midcontinent Channel (23) throughout North Dakota and South Dakota multiple times during the week.
