Edenton, N.C. - UND baseball sophomore Jake Magner is spending his summer nearly 1,500 miles away from his home town of Grand Rapids, Minn., on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Sioux slugger was picked to play in the Coastal Plain Amateur Baseball League and began his summer season in late May playing first base and batting clean up for the Edenton Steamers.
Magner was recently named to the American Team in the Coastal Plain All-Star Game. He currently is tied for the league lead in home runs with 12. In fact, his 12th home run of the season was a critical one for the Steamers as his three-run shot on Monday night helped secure a playoff spot in the race for the Pettit Cup.
Read about his journey below in the sixh installment of a summer blog that Magner will provide for Sioux fans on his experiences in a league that features wood bats and some of the top collegiate players in the nation.
Swinging on the Banks: The Coastal Plain League regular season wraps up today. We travel to play a doubleheader against the Outer Banks with the No. 7 seed in the playoffs locked up. We secured that seed last night with a doubleheader sweep of the Petersburg Generals. It was nice to play well in our last home games at Historic Hicks Field this season.
Depending on the outcome of games today, we will either play the Wilson Tobs or the Peninsula Pilots Thursday in the first round of the playoffs. The first round is a single-elimination game. If you lose you go home. If you win the first round game, you move on to the semi-finals which is a best of three round. If you win that, you move on to the finals which is also a best of three round.
Our team is getting hot at exactly the right time and hopefully we can stay hot throughout the playoffs and secure the third Pettit Cup for the Edenton fans and community.
