SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The University of North Dakota captured five of six singles matches and went three for three in doubles play to claim the doubles point in a 6-1 win over host South Dakota this evening in Sioux City, Iowa.

UND ended a five-match losing streak and improved to 10-6 with the victory.

Juniors Katie Callison (Mesa, Ariz.) and Brynne Wischer (Grand Forks) each earned three-set victories for the Sioux, highlighting singles play. Callison defeated Rijalda Zejnic (3-6, 6-4, 10-8) in No. 2 singles, while Wischer downed Isabel Nunez (5-7, 6-2, 10-7) in the No. 3 slot.

The Sioux received straight-set victories from junior Molly Maurer (Hutchinson, Minn.), senior Katie Wessman (Fargo, N.D.) and freshman Tiffany Reisenauer (Dickinson, N.D.).

Maurer cruised to 6-0 and 6-1 wins over Janea Hagen in No. 4 singles.

Wessman blanked Melanie Rocke (6-0, 6-0) in No. 5 singles, while Reisenauer defeated Ashley Waltman (6-1, 6-2) in No. 6 singles.

USD’s lone singles victory was a Shadi Soleymani No. 1 singles win over Emily Callison (Sr., Mesa, Ariz.), 7-5 and 6-2.

The Sioux overpowered the Coyotes in doubles play, beginning with an 8-4 win by Wischer and Emily Callison over Soleymani and Zejnic in No. 1 doubles.

Katie Callison teamed with Wessman for an 8-0 win over Nunez and Waltman in No. 2 doubles, while Maurer and Reisenauer defeated Hagen and Rockne 8-2.

“We won all of the close matches, so a 6-1 match is not indicative of how close it was,” said UND head coach Tom Wynne. “Brynne (Wischer) showed a lot of heart coming back and keeping her streak of never losing a third set tiebreak intact. 

“We play Creighton tomorrow and we will have to be twice as good to get past them, but we’re looking forward to it." 

UND and Creighton will square off at 11 a.m. in Omaha, Neb.
