GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota head tennis coach Tom Wynne announced today the signing of Rochester, Minn., native Erin Kappers to a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Fighting Sioux beginning in 2009-10.
Kappers, a senior at Rochester Mayo, competed at No. 1 singles this past season and led Mayo to a Minnesota Class AA runner-up finish. At the state championship, Kappers won her No. 1 singles match in the team competition despite playing with a serious illness.
Kappers won a state doubles title as a junior in 2007.
“Erin will add valuable doubles experience to the team and I feel she is just touching on her potential in singles,” said Wynne. “We look forward to working with her and helping her reach new heights with her game.”
In June 2008, Kappers was selected by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to compete at the Girls 18’s National Team Championship.
Kappers is the second player to sign an NLI with the Sioux tennis program. Hallie Welk of Bismarck, N.D., signed an NLI in November.
