Houston, Texas – The University of North Dakota volleyball team was well represented as Great West Conference officials released the individual awards and all-conference teams on the eve of the league’s inaugural postseason tournament.
First-year head coach Ashley Hardee was named the Great West Conference Coach of the Year and senior Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) was named the league’s Setter of the Year.
“We are very proud of all four girls that made the all-conference teams, especially Megan for being named Setter of the Year,” Hardee said. “We had five different players earn Offensive Player of the Week honors during the season and Megan was the driving force behind that. Everything in our offense runs through her and she did a phenomenal job all season for us.”
Langseth, who now ranks fourth on the UND all-time charts in assists with 2,888, also earned a spot on the all-conference first team and was joined by senior Britta Hanson (Thompson, N.D.) and sophomore Devin Trefz (Bagley, Minn.) on that squad.
Hanson has put together the second best blocking season in UND history, totaling 133 blocks. Trefz leads the team with a career-high 342 kills and ranks second in that category among Great West players.
The Sioux were the only team with three players on the first team. Sophomore Annika Smed (Albert Lea, Minn.) earned a spot on the second team. Smed has posted 283 kills and 299 digs and leads the team with eight double-doubles.
UND posted a 20-6 record and reeled off an 11-1 mark in Great West play to win the first conference title in program history and earn the top seed at this weekend’s tournament.
Utah Valley’s Kayli Broadbent was named the Player of the Year. New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Sabrina Baby earned the Defensive Player of the Year nod and South Dakota’s Bailey Reshel was named the Freshman of the Year. The Sioux will open the Great West Tournament on Friday at 5:30 p.m. when they face the winner of South Dakota and Texas-Pan American in the first semifinal.
