GRAND FORKS, N.D. --- University of North Dakota head softball coach Sami Strinz announced the signing of pitcher/infielder Caralyn Chewning to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Fighting Sioux beginning in 2010-11.
A native of Willamina, Ore., Chewning was named the Oregon Class 3A pitcher of the year last season and co-pitcher of the year her sophomore campaign. She has made the all-state team her freshman, sophomore and junior years.
"Caralyn is going to be a weapon in the circle for us," Strinz said. "She was clocked at her high school state tournament last year at a consistent 66 mph. She throws hard and has a wicked change up. Caralyn is a five-tool player and when she's not pitching, she will find a home in the infield. She is also another lefty hitter that will improve our team's overall power and versatility. She chose us over some other great schools because she wants to leave her legacy in this program."
Chewning pitched in the 3A Oregon title game where Willamina finished runner-up as it dropped a 4-3 decision to Valley Catholic, but not due to her pitching as she only allowed one earned run (three unearned) while striking out 14 batters, seven looking.
Planning on majoring in nursing she, was an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society. Chewning chose UND for "getting my education while playing the sport I love."
The daughter of Brad and Detonia Chewning, she was also a four-year letterwinner in volleyball and basketball earning various first-team honors.
