HOUSTON, Texas -- As Kelli Dahle, a senior golfer on the University of North Dakota women's team, wraps up one of her final meets as a student-athlete this week at the Great West Conference tournament, she ends a career that has faced a number of different levels of competition.
Over her collegiate career, Dahle has golfed at the Division I, II, and III level. Surely, one of the few student-athletes in the history of the NCAA to accomplish that feat.
It started in 2005-06, when Dahle was a dual-sport athlete at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, playing golf and hockey. Dahle wanted to get into physical therapy, however, and transferred to UND the next season.
"I tried out for the team, and Coach (Dan) Frei gave me a chance to be on the team," Dahle said.
Dahle helped the Fighting Sioux to a sixth place at the Division II national meet that year, and she also had a number of top 15 finishes that spring. She increased her level of play the next season, and was UND's top golfer at the NCAA Division II Regional held at King's Walk in Grand Forks, N.D.
Now this year, as UND transitions to the NCAA Division I level, Dahle has seen another level of competition.
"There are more golfers shooting in the 70s and they do it consistently," Dahle, said adding, "There's a big difference, but we all like to be challenged."
The Great West Conference men's and women's golf championships continue through today and wrap tomorrow. Check FightingSioux.com for scores and recap of the UND teams.
