GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota women's hockey team gave up three second-period goals tonight in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action against Minnesota Duluth, as the Bulldogs score three power-play goals on their way to a 4-1 win that the Sioux spent 21-plus minutes with a player in the box (37 total penalty minutes).

Freshman Mary Loken scored what gave the Sioux a 1-0 lead in the first period but ended up being their lone goal in a fast-paced first period.

Loken found herself in the right place at the right time when senior Susanne Fellner fired a slapshot from the point that was initially blocked before Stephanie Roy found the puck and put a shot on net. Jennifer Harss gave up the rebound which Loken wristed in to the open net. Harss would finish the game with 26 saves.

"We felt pretty good," head coach Brian Idalski said. "We wanted to skate, get pucks deep, forecheck and I think we did a nice job of that early."

It only took 24 seconds into the second stanza before the game was knotted at a goal apiece when Emmanuelle Blaise would score her first of what would be a hat-trick night.

After that goal the game slowed down to what seemed like a snail's pace as nine penalties were called in the period, six of them on the Sioux, leading to two more power-play goals in the period for the Bulldogs. Katherine Wilson would score the first at 10:31 and Blais would score on a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity at 5:11.

"Our kids need to adjust," Idalski said. "They need to pick up on how the game is being called. I don't think they did a good job of that and we took a lot of silly penalties. I thought we were very undisciplined and you can not do that at this level."

Heading into the final stanza penalties were at 10 for 20 minutes for the Sioux and five for 10 on the Bulldogs, the two teams would almost match those totals in a chippy third with UND going seven for 17 minutes and six for twelve for UMD.

Blais would complete the hat trick at 11:13 of the period on another 5-on-3 power play.

Minnesota Duluth would finish the night going three for 12 on the power play with 27 of their 46 shots on goal coming on the man-advantage.

Sophomore Stephanie Ney (100 Mile House, British Columbia) would end up with 38 saves in the game.

The two teams will meet up again tomorrow as the Sioux will look for a series split in the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center with a 7:07 opening face off.

"I think if we can stay out of the box and play more five-on-five we'll be better," Idalski said. "I think shots were pretty even five-on-five, the major disparity in shots came on the penalty kill."
