ST. CLOUD, MINN. --- The University of North Dakota women's hockey team came into the day looking for a sweep over St. Cloud State University at the National Hockey Center but will have to settle with a series split as the Huskies edge the Sioux, 3-2.

"There was a lot of good things this weekend," head coach Brian Idalski said. "We are starting to execute a little better and got some good looks. Any points on the road in the WCHA are tough to come by and we put ourselves in position for a sweep. I am happy with our effort and we have a big series coming up with Ohio State. We have a young group and I think it will only continue to get better and better."

St. Cloud State jumped in front going down as an even strength goal as a Sioux just returned to the ice, but the Huskies took advantage of the 4-on-3 power play setting up a goal by Felicia Nelson at 13:17.

The Sioux would close out the opening frame strong though keeping the puck mostly in the Huskies zone and it paid off as Jordan Slavin (Erie, Colo.) put a shot towards net from near the blue line that redirected off a defender and past Tayler VanDenakker for the unassisted goal. It was the freshman defenseman's first collegiate goal.

With 8:44 remaining in the second stanza Ashley Furia (Sedalia, Colo.) brought the puck in and fired a wrist shot that went off the crossbar, straight down and out. The referee nearest the to the net immediately called no goal and play continued. Next whistle came at 6:24 and the play was reviewed but the call was upheld with the score remaining 1-1.

The Sioux would get their first power-play attempt with exactly two minutes remaining in the second period. Ashley Holmes (Miltona, Minn.) fired a slop shot that went off VanDenakker's glove-side post as the Sioux came with in inches of taking the lead for the second time but the period would go scoreless.

"We knew they were going to come in hungry and going 1-1 into the third I thought we put ourselves into a situation where we could get some points but some of their kids made the plays down the stretch."

The Huskies would regain the lead as Kelly Lewis (Forest Lake, Minn.) would put the Sioux on the penalty kill for body checking and Caitlin Hogan would find the back of the net less then a minute into the third period.

The Sioux would get another crack at their power play at 14:47 as they put some pressure on net and Lisa Martinson was called for cross checking, but the failed to take advantage with the Huskies killing off the penalty.

Hogan would give the Huskies the first two-goal lead of the weekend for either team when she put the puck on net, caught a bounce that found its way past Ney at 12:29 of the third.

Down by two Idalski would pull Ney with 1:42 remaining and immediately the Sioux got a rush on net and Mary Loken (Roseau, Minn.) was hauled down by Danielle Hirsch to give the Sioux one last hope with 1:07 remaining.

Furia would score for the Sioux to cut the lead to one but with only 5.4 seconds remaining on the clock and UND would be forced to head home with series split. The goal was the freshman's second of the season, unassisted.

The Sioux now return home to take on Ohio State at the Ralph Englestad Arena on Nov. 6-7 with 7:07 p.m. and 4:07 p.m. starts, respectively.
