Senior Melissa Jaques leads the Fighting Sioux in all-time points, after scoring two goal last Saturday.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Last weekend was a history-making one for senior forward Melissa Jaques of the University of North Dakota women's hockey team. Not only did she score the tying and winning goals in Saturday's overtime win over Bemidji State, she set the school points record. She also is nearing the all-time record for goals and assists.

However, Jaques remains humble about her accomplishments, citing her good linemates and team as the biggest factors in her success.

"Actually, I think one of my friends was more excited about it then I was," Jaques said. "She came down to Bemidji (Minn.) because she thought I would break the record, but at the end of the game she thought I was one point away yet. I think we all did, because we didn't know I had got an assist until after the game. I had to call her when I got on the bus to let her know I actually broke it."

Jaques said there was an extra meaning behind her record goal because it gave UND a win. "It was an exciting goal in an important game," she said.

Head women's hockey coach Brian Idalski said Jaques is very gifted athletically and balanced, as evidenced by the 34 goals and 34 assists in her career.

"There is not one thing that puts her over the top," Idalski said. "She see the ice very well, moves the puck very well and can score, but also for our team can log some pretty tough minutes in our own end defensively against other teams' top lines. It is a tribute to her all-around game."

Remaining as humble and focused as ever, Jaques said it's an honor, but there are many other goals that the Fighting Sioux want to accomplish this season.

"We still have a lot of hockey left," Jaques said, "and, hopefully, I can do my part, play well and help the team."
