Plenty of UND hockey-related comings and goings this week in the world of professional hockey.
Today it was announced that former All-American Ed Belfour (1986-87), the third-winningest goalie in NHL history and a two-time Vezina Trophy winner, has been hired by the St. Louis Blues as a goaltending consultant.
Earlier this week, a pair of standouts from the 2008-09 senior class inked their first professional contracts. Defenseman Zach Jones signed with the South Carolina Stingrays, the defending East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) champions. In the team's official press release, head coach Cail MacLean said, "Zach came highly recommended as a defensive-minded defenseman. He plays tough, keeps things simple, but is very effective when it comes to taking the body and defensively, taking care of his own zone."
Meanwhile, Jones' teammate, Ryan Martens, agreed to a deal to play in Germany with EHC Dortmund.
